Common questions about choosing, fitting and buying guttering — plus how delivery, Click & Collect and trade accounts work at The Guttering Centre.
Choosing the right guttering
What size gutter do I need?
It depends on your roof area, pitch and local rainfall. Our capacity calculator sizes the right profile and number of downpipes from a few measurements. As a rough guide, standard homes use 112mm Half Round; larger roofs and heavy-rainfall areas suit 120mm Deep Flow or Ogee; commercial buildings use Kommercial.
How do I identify my existing gutter profile?
Look at the shape from the side: Half Round is a simple semicircle, Square Line is flat-fronted and box-shaped, Ogee has a decorative flat back with an S-curve front, and Deep Flow is a deeper half round. Our compatibility guide has photos of each. If unsure, take a clear side-on photo or bring a sample to a branch.
Can I mix different gutter brands?
Sometimes. Half Round is the most widely cross-compatible and generally mixes with FloPlast, Hunter, Marley, Polypipe and others. Ogee and commercial profiles are far less interchangeable, and Krown Ogee and Krown Cast Iron Effect are Aquaflow-specific. Always confirm the exact profile before mixing parts — see the compatibility guide.
What colours does guttering come in?
Most profiles are available in White, Black, Brown, Grey and Anthracite Grey. Anthracite is the most popular modern choice. Cast Iron Effect comes in a matt black finish that mimics traditional cast iron.
Fitting guttering
How far apart should gutter brackets be?
Space fascia brackets at 800–1000mm centres for Half Round, Square Line and Ogee, and 600–800mm for Deep Flow and Kommercial. Add an extra bracket within 150mm of every union, angle, running outlet and stop end. On very exposed or heavy-snow sites, reduce spacing further.
What fall should I set on a gutter run?
Lay the gutter to a slight fall of about 3mm per metre (1:350) towards the outlet. Fix the bracket at the high end first, then work down to the outlet. Leave the manufacturer's 6–10mm expansion gap at union joints.
How far apart should downpipe clips be?
No more than 1.8m apart, with a clip near the top and bottom of each run. Use an offset bend (swan neck) at the eaves to bring the downpipe back to the wall, and a shoe at the bottom.
How do I fix a leaking gutter joint?
Most leaks are at union joints. Check the rubber seal is clean and seated, that the gutter ends are within the expansion gap, and that brackets are supporting the joint within 150mm. Replacing the union or seal usually solves it. For sealant repairs, use a gutter-grade sealant from our sealants & adhesives range.
